History of Keystone
A brief history of the key events in the Snake River valley that formed the Town of Keystone, Colorado.
Snake River Silver Rush!
In July, John Coely discovered lead-silver ore on Glacier Mountain. In September, Governor Robert W Steele, James Huff and Robert Taylor discovered the Gus Blemont load on McClellan Mountain.
First Keystone Homestead
Wiliam Haywood and Henry Thompson applied for a 160 acre homestead at the southwestern base of the Loveland Pass Road that included the present-day Enclave townhomes and opened the Haywood Half-Way house stage coach station.
Warren Station Burned Down
Warren station which was the first Hotel in Keystone, also became the first hotel to shutdown.
Ski Tip Ranch
After 11 years of settlement, the Elwood family registered a claim for what would become the Ski Tip Ranch. The placer/ranch was sold to Thomas Black in 1911 and to Max and Edna Dercum in 1941 who developed the Ski Tip Ranch and Lodge over the next five decades.
Keystone Interational Inc.
Max Dercum and Bill Bergman founded the corporation that would develop the Keystone ski mountain and resort.
Town of Keystone is Formed
March 28th, the registered voters of Keystone voted to incorporate as a Home Rule town.
